North Jakarta
Operating from Greenlake City in North Jakarta, our Indonesia programme works alongside local partners to deliver practical community support — from education to basic needs assistance — in one of Southeast Asia's largest and most complex urban environments.
How we got here
North Jakarta is a study in contrasts. On one side: gleaming shopping malls, gated communities, and the infrastructure of a rising economic power. On the other: crowded kampungs, informal settlements, and families for whom Jakarta's growth has meant rising costs rather than rising incomes. Thanksgiving Australia's Indonesia work is based in Greenlake City, a suburb of North Jakarta. The programme is younger than our work in Egypt or Nepal — but it follows the same principles: partner locally, move at a sustainable pace, and let the community's own priorities shape the work. Our local partners are community-based organisations with years of experience serving families in North Jakarta's underserved neighbourhoods. Together, we support education, basic needs, and small-scale livelihood initiatives — the kinds of practical, durable interventions that make daily life more stable for families on tight margins.
