Kampong Speu Province
West of Phnom Penh, bordering the Cardamom Mountains, Kampong Speu is one of Cambodia's poorer rural provinces. Our work here is newer — focused on building relationships with local community partners and identifying where practical, long-term support can make the deepest difference.
How we got here
Cambodia has one of the fastest-growing economies in Southeast Asia, but rural provinces like Kampong Speu have been largely left behind. Most families in the province rely on subsistence rice farming or garment factory work in nearby towns — both precarious in different ways. Thanksgiving Australia's Cambodia programme began with a simple principle: before we commit to anything, we need to know the people, the place, and what they tell us they need. Over the past two years, we have been building relationships with community leaders and local partners in Kampong Speu — learning the landscape, understanding the challenges, and identifying where our particular model of quiet, durable support fits best. The work here is in its early chapters. That is deliberate. We would rather go slowly and get it right than rush and get it wrong.
